I Love the Smell of Jetfuel in the Morning

When I was 6 weeks old, my parents loaded me onto a boat and the whole family shipped off to Italy. We lived in hotels before we moved into an apartment and I developed a taste for coffee because my nanny, Maria, laced my bottle with the beverage.
So now, when I smell diesel fuel, I want to go somewhere. Fast.
I love everything about travel, including the getting there part. The straight to video movies, the bad food. The little bottles of vodka.
In the old days, we used to get 'travel bags' from the flight attendants. You know, filled with shoehorns, toothbrush and paste. Comb.
On the odd occasion I get upgraded to biz/first class then yes, love the blankets or comforters, the slippers, the fold out flat seats, the warm chocolate chip cookies.

Ever since I was a nerdy kid, sitting in an airport bar in Lisbon, watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon and waiting for our flight to the States, I've never known an airport I didn't love. Even the time we landed in the middle of a Costa Rican jungle in a flimsy Russian made prop, and my husband looked out the window and said: "S&%t! We're landing here??" I grabbed the kids and held on, my heart beating out of rhythm, but for all the right reasons.
Years later, I'm still a nerdy kid at heart. Always getting ready for my next trip.

Glad to hear from you Amanda. Will someone please tell me how to upgrade to first class. I got to go to Paris first class and ooh la la it was worth every penny. Let me know when you go somewhere else. I travel vicariously through you.
ReplyDeleteAmen and amen. To this day, I love the smell of diesel fumes because it transports me back to my early days backpacking through foreign capitals. There is no better feeling than putting on my travel clothes, zipping up my suitcase, and heading for the airport.
ReplyDeleteI love everything about travel except getting there. I find myself getting impatient on long-haul flights and can't wait for them to be over.
ReplyDeleteI also love airports! I spend too much time in them, but know which ones have good shopping for books, or art supplies or christmas presents. I love to sit and wait for the plane, seems silly but I do. I do not like being stuffed into a small crowded seat - that's a problem for me! And I hate when the person next to me is sneezing.....but like you - overall I love traveling.
ReplyDeleteAs I'm traveling all over the world - currently in England - I relate to this post. I adore your photos and your attitude, although I must say that diesel isn't my favorite scent!
ReplyDeleteyeah, more of this!
ReplyDeleteSister ~ I've termed the smell of diesel fumes memory a "Deja Pew"!

So, in Italy, you were always in a perambulator, about diesel bus exhaust level, and voila this paired with adoring Italians, since even as a tiny baby, you were a lovely little lady! Che bella bambina!
Hahahaha!! Thanks Sis for this further clarification of why I love the smell of diesel fuel --- sitting at bus exhaust level in a perambulator while I was a baby in Italy - brilliant memory of that Deja Pew!
