tel aviv market

my israeli friend and i went shopping in the tel aviv market for shabbat dinner. i was stunned by the variety and color of the produce - the eggplants and peppers have an almost muscular quality to them.

i loved smelling the spices and admiring the enormous range of textures

a favorite thing to do is to stop for a fresh squeezed orange juice. my friend is sipping juice made from jaffa oranges, the most fragrant, grown in the region

hookahs, hubbly bubbly, sheesha - whatever you call these middle eastern water pipes, they sell a lot of them here.........

the market was guarded by this handsome plainclothed israeli soldier, who seemed the same age as my son. locals have long stopped paying notice to the fact that their everyday errands are protected by someone carrying an uzi. these facts did not escape my attention, however, but such is daily life in israel...
next stop, jerusalem....
