beautiful istria

with our car pointed east, we drove from milan past trieste (and thought of james joyce writing his epic ulysses in this adriatic city) through a tiny slice of slovenia and onto the croatian peninsula of istria. the city of rovinj is a jewel of a place, even off season

and even in gray weather the colors of the houses lining the cobblestone streets lit up the day

one morning i got up to go running -- i passed through a stone gate into a small forest. the air smelled of figs and woodsmoke and i was amazed to see so many different types of pine trees - the path wound around a corner and suddenly i saw the adriatic spread out in front of me, pushing gray waves up onto the rocky beach

we drove down the coast to the little town of pula. in the middle of the village sits one of the most intact colosseums in the world dating to the same time period as the one in roma.......

......and as we turned a corner we came across this tiny temple, tucked away in a piazza........

we are now heading even further east.........and a little north!

til next time my fellow travelers........xo♡a

  5. I am seeing so many beautiful cities through all the blogs I visit. I knew a guy from Pula once (quite a good-looking guy too :)) but he never told me what gems exist in the city. Now I know I have to visit and see if for myself.

  6. Isn`t that Croatian Sea of an incredible colour? And the sight of the pine trees just brought me back to Bol on the island Brac. How lovely of you to share your photos with us! Enjoy your days!

  9. Ah, dear friend....just can't believe you were in MY Country!
I am half-Croatian (my Mother's side)...and have visited this gorgeous land many times! I am thrilled you visited! My family lives quite North - about an hour's drive South from Vienna...and we are surrounded by the Julien Alps...it's gorgeous!

Sigh...I am so jealous...can't wait to see where you land next!
Meanwhile, I am plotting my course to capture Monsieur Greathouse's photo... isn't it funny...he has proved to be a more difficult challenge than Placi!

    Safe travels!!!

    Love,

    ♥ Robin ♥

p.s. Did you try a glass of Slivovitz?

  11. Love your photos and travel stories, Amanda! The view down that narrow stone street is enticing and the fact that you do not have a bunch of tourists in your photos speaks of the remoteness of areas. Travel safely and know that you are taking us all with you in spirit.

rosaria - this is a magical place - and especially so since learning of the sad history of dubrovnic's recent past. it's so close to italy - maybe the next trip you take back home you can take a side trip to visit?

genie - i think the lack of tourists in istria is a combination of it being somewhat remote as well as it being off season (my favorite time to travel!)
